Kajillionaire
Con artists Theresa and Robert have spent 26 years training their only daughter, Old Dolio, to swindle, scam, and steal at every opportunity. During a desperate, hastily conceived heist, they charm a kind stranger, Melanie, into joining their next scheme, completely shaking up Old Dolio’s routine. Her unlikely connection with Melanie begins to challenge Old Dolio’s odd and stoic reality and she finds herself suddenly caught between the only family she has ever known and the prospect of total freedom.
Directors' Fortnight: “Polymorphic artist Miranda July returns behind the camera with a tale that is both surreal and deeply embodied. The adventures of a dysfunctional family become the pretext to depict a parallel world that mirrors ours in its strangeness. A constantly surprising world, where the absurd and the bizarre are always accompanied by a unique grace.”
Miranda July: “Paolo Moretti’s enthusiasm for Kajillionaire was an early, and deeply meaningful, vote of confidence. I am very honored to be part of this weird, historic, Director’s Fortnight 2020.”
